By Zoe Schantz

The Burgess Institute for Entrepreneurship and Innovation is proud to recognize Jillian Whitley (’26, Eli Broad College of Business) as the 2024 Bradbury Scholar. Whitley, a marketing major with minors in Entrepreneurship & Innovation and Public Relations, is the creative force behind a growing jewelry brand designed to empower individuals.

The Bradbury Scholarship, a symbol of outstanding commitment to innovation and excellence, is awarded to individuals who have shown exceptional dedication to their entrepreneurial journey.

A Creative Foundation

Growing up in a creative, supportive family from Saline, Michigan, Whitley recalls her early entrepreneurial efforts, selling handmade baseball-themed bookmarks and handmade bracelets. "Both of my parents encouraged me to create my own path and follow my passions, I was lucky enough that they signed me up for local art classes, including a jewelry making class," she shared.

Whitley credits her mother, an English teacher, for fostering a sense of creativity in their household. Her grandfather, a business owner, showed her what it takes to be an entrepreneur. "Though my parents have never owned a business, they have taught me valuable skills,” she explained, “creating their own opportunities, and problem solving.

Crafting Opportunities and Empowerment

Now, as the founder of the jewelry brand, J. Margaret, Whitley uses her creativity to design pieces that empower others. She proudly identifies as an entrepreneur, saying, "Being an entrepreneur means that I am able to create my own opportunities and make a positive impact on my community." Her passion for crafting and her desire to build a meaningful brand has been a driving force in her business journey.

Navigating the Entrepreneurial Landscape

Whitley's involvement with the Burgess Institute has been instrumental to her growth. "The Burgess Institute's resources have allowed me to grow in many ways," she said. From legal guidance with trademarks to funding for monthly expenses and mentorship, she has found the support she needs to thrive. Whitley describes Burgess Institute as a “like-minded and supportive community… [Burgess] understands my drive and commitment for my business and the creativity needed for this career.”

A standout moment in her entrepreneurial path has been participating in the Student-Made MSU program. "I have been able to grow my business through pop-ups and multiple retail locations on campus where I have been able to learn skills such as how packaging must be altered for a retail environment,” she said.

A Vision for the Future

Being named the 2024 Bradbury Scholar holds deep meaning for Whitley. "This has allowed me to continue my entrepreneurial and academic endeavors to help further my career," she said. Looking ahead, Whitley plans to gain experience in the fashion marketing industry while continuing to grow J. Margaret. "I plan to always be working on my business and hope to go full-time with it eventually and have it be a known and trusted brand.”

As Whitley continues to shape her path, she remains committed to the core values that have guided her so far: creativity, community, and innovation. With her drive and the support of the Burgess Institute, the future is bright for this talented entrepreneur.
