Spartans for Startups Internship Program

The Spartans for Startups Internship Program connects Michigan State University students with early-stage, Spartan-led startups—creating hands-on learning experiences while supporting founders as they build what’s next.

Facilitated by the Burgess Institute for Entrepreneurship & Innovation, the program is designed to activate talent, expand access, and strengthen the Spartan entrepreneurial ecosystem.

The Spartans for Startups Internship Program is made possible through partnership and support from the Lansing Economic Area Partnership (LEAP) TREK Small Business Support Hub, powered by funding from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation and in part by SLFRP0127, awarded to the State of Michigan by the U.S. Department of the Treasury as part of the American Rescue Plan.

What the Program Provides

Spartans for Startups is built to work for both students and founders.

For Students
Students gain real-world startup experience by working directly with founders on meaningful projects. Interns learn how early-stage companies operate, contribute to growth, and develop skills that translate across industries and career paths.

For Spartan-Led Startups
The program provides financial support to participating companies to help offset intern wages, making it possible for early-stage ventures to access talented MSU students even when resources are limited.

This approach ensures that opportunity is driven by potential and fit, not budget.

More Than an Internship

Spartans for Startups is intentionally designed as more than a traditional work experience. Interns are immersed in startup environments where they:

  • Collaborate closely with founders and small teams
  • Take ownership of real projects and outcomes
  • Learn the pace, uncertainty, and creativity of early-stage ventures

For founders, interns bring fresh perspective, energy, and Spartan ingenuity—supporting progress at a critical stage of growth.

Who It’s For

  • MSU students seeking hands-on experience in startup and entrepreneurial environments
  • Spartan-owned or Spartan-led early-stage companies looking to engage student talent with programmatic support
