Jillian Lorenz, a proud Spartan and accomplished entrepreneur, will address the next generation of Spartans as the commencement speaker at Michigan State University’s Fall 2024 graduation ceremony. A 2000 graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Lorenz has maintained strong ties to her alma mater and the Burgess Institute for Entrepreneurship & Innovation, where she continues to champion student success.
Lorenz’s connection to the Burgess Institute is deeply rooted. She serves as an entrepreneur-in-residence, guiding student founders through the Launch venture creation program. In this role, she helps students sharpen their business ideas, prepare for market launch, and build confidence as future entrepreneurs. Additionally, as a member of the Institute’s External Advisory Council, Lorenz plays a vital role in ensuring that programs meet student needs and industry standards. Her involvement extends beyond formal positions; she regularly participates in events such as Innovate State, 2DAY VENTURE and Venture Summit, further demonstrating her commitment to fostering the entrepreneurial spirit.
As the co-founder of The Barre Code, Lorenz has transformed the wellness industry. Her entrepreneurial journey began with a desire to challenge societal norms and redefine fitness. The Barre Code franchise offers an inclusive approach to wellness, blending cardio, strength training, and relaxation in a supportive environment. Lorenz’s innovative vision has been celebrated in prominent publications like Forbes, Vogue, Entrepreneur, and Women’s Health.
After the successful sale of The Barre Code in 2023, Lorenz now shares her expertise as an executive coach at SoulYou Coaching, and venture partner at Exit Quotient Ventures, where she invests in the next generation of business founders and helps them reach their full potential.
Reflecting on her success, Lorenz credits her values and adaptability. “The foundation of my success lies in staying aligned with my inner truth and being willing to adapt and grow,” she said. “Success isn’t just about hard work—it’s about tuning inward, trusting the guidance, and making decisions rooted in purpose rather than fear.”
Lorenz aims to leave MSU’s Fall 2024 graduates with an empowering message: “You have one life. Dream bigger, align your actions with your vision, and go daringly toward it. You already have all the tools within to create the life you desire. By being true to yourself, taking bold risks, and using your Spartan will, you can make choices that allow you to reach your greatest and highest expression of self.”
On Dec. 14 at 10 a.m., Lorenz will deliver her inspiring address at the Breslin Center to graduates from the Colleges of Arts and Letters, Business, Education, Music, and Social Science, as well as James Madison College and the Residential College in the Arts and Humanities. During the ceremony, she will also be awarded an honorary Doctorate in Business.
