Mahak Keswani: An International Student Excelling in Entrepreneurship and Embracing Tradition on Homecoming Court '24

By Erin Timmerman

Mahak Keswani is a senior studying Advertising Management at the College of Communication Arts and Sciences, with minors in Business and Entrepreneurship and Innovation through the Burgess Institute for Entrepreneurship & Innovation.

Being on the Homecoming Court has been a significant experience for Keswani, who is originally from Dubai, United Arab Emirates. She notes how different this tradition is from anything back home.

"It has been an amazing and diverse experience to be a part of because the 11 of us in the cohort come from many different backgrounds and bring unique experiences. It’s been truly incredible."

This appreciation for diversity and learning from others has been a common theme in Keswani’s life, both on the Homecoming Court and in her academic career. Growing up with an entrepreneurial father, Keswani developed an interest in pursuing entrepreneurship herself. After learning about the Entrepreneurship and Innovation minor through the Burgess Institute, she saw it as a perfect opportunity to expand her skills and knowledge.

Keswani reflects on her experience taking the courses required for the minor,
"All the courses were very hands-on and focused on experiential learning, rather than the typical setup of tests and homework. It was more project-based, and I liked that—it set the institute apart from any other classes I’ve taken. All the instructors were amazing and brought unique thinking and perspectives to the classes."

Keswani's experience at Michigan State University has truly made the university feel like a home away from home. As an international student, she reflects on how exciting and fulfilling this journey has been, especially since it’s drastically different from what she grew up with in Dubai.

This past week, Keswani has had the honor of being deeply involved in various events that celebrate not only her accomplishments as an international Spartan but also the achievements of her fellow cohort members. The opportunity to participate in Homecoming has allowed her to embrace new traditions while showcasing her unique perspective and celebrating the diversity within her group.

Reflecting on her journey, Mahak shares, “My experience at MSU has taught me the importance of unity and understanding. I hope that my role on this year’s Homecoming Court serves as a bridge, fostering a sense of belonging and inclusivity among all Spartans, regardless of their background or identity.”

Through her involvement in the Burgess Institute and as a member of the Homecoming Court, Mahak is committed to making a lasting impact on the MSU community, ensuring that every Spartan feels valued and celebrated.
