Dennis & Suzanne Birkestrand
Dennis and Suzanne Birkestrand are entrepreneurs and business leaders whose careers reflect a deep belief in private enterprise and the value of building businesses from the ground up.
The Birkestrands met at The Maytag Company in Newton, Iowa, where Dennis worked in marketing and Suzanne in home economics. In 1988, they left Maytag to launch Factory Direct Appliance, a venture dedicated to serving new home builders and remodelers. Over time, they grew the business from a single store in Kansas to seven locations across four states.
Dennis is a graduate of Luther College with a double major in economics and business administration. Suzanne is a proud Spartan, having earned her degree in Home Economics Education with a minor in journalism from Michigan State University in 1965.
Through the Simpson-Birkestrand Scholarship for Entrepreneurs, they are supporting Spartans who are learning best business practices and preparing to contribute to a strong and innovative private enterprise economy.
